US Junk Cars in Mexico
In the “auto recycling junk cars” market nothing should be surprising; after all, it is much more than simply cash for wrecked cars and scrap yards that buy cars. The scrap car recycling market is about rejuvenation and recycling. Next time you get cash for wrecked cars, your old clunker could end up with a new owner down in Mexico. This obviously only applies in regions of the Southwestern US, since transporting cars from Northeast Ohio would not be economically feasible. In an article posted on December 7, 2014 by Angela Kocherga of ABC Kvue.com titled ‘Selling used American cars in Mexico’, Ms. Kocherga cites the following: “Thousands of old cars & trucks cross the border into Mexico where there’s a thriving used car business.” According to Eduard Felix, a vehicle dealer, “somebody’s trash is somebody else’s treasure, they refurbish all the vehicles and they resell them. Some cars have been in accidents; one was missing its hood, another had a smashed windshield. There are cars that look totally destroyed but they get back on the road & run better than the ones in Mexico. Mexico allows vehicles 5 years or older to be imported. Under NAFTA, the age of the car has gradually decreased since 2009 from ten, to eight and in 2015 will drop again to four years or older. Importation fees vary from $800 to $1200 depending on the age and value of the vehicle. Some owners also use customs brokers or car import companies which charge a fee to facilitate the process. About 600 vehicles a day used the Santa Teresa Border Crossing before Mexican Customs reduced the amount it processes vehicles to just three hours for companies that handle most of the import transactions. The controversy over used cars in Mexico has been tied up in legal challenges. Right now an injunction issued by a judge allows a handful of companies to import salvage vehicles. Owners who do not make it across the border before the noon cutoff park their cars wherever they can find space near the border. Some found a patch of desert right off the main road. Other vehicles bound for Mexico spend the night at an enclosed lot near the border owned by an import company so they can be among the first to line up the next morning.” To view the complete article, check this link: http://www.kvue.com/
In auto recycling junk cars it seems that different geographic areas of the market enjoy unique benefits. In Northeast Ohio, the cash for wrecked cars market and those scrap yards that buy cars, have an advantage compared to those in the Southwest because the usage of road salt tends to deteriorate cars much quicker, thus allowing access to significantly newer “scrap” vehicles compared to areas with warmer climates. As far as the above mentioned article, one key point that concerns me is if the Mexican demand for US cars is strong, is it encouraging theft of US vehicles? The story doesn’t indicate that either way, however, an April 13, 2009 article on Wsj.com expresses that many stolen vehicles in southern border towns are likely ending up in Mexico.
