Selling Old Vehicles for Scrap
Cash 4 Cars Akron is back with another update relating to the auto scrap and recycling happenings in the US. We are where to junk a car in Barberton, New Franklin and Fairlawn. We try to make selling an old car a simple process with a quote for a junk car offered over the phone and the old car removal is included in the price. Our next topic focuses on when government or service vehicles reach end-of-live status. Our first location we analyze involves the city of Springfield, MA, which is located in the southern area of the state and boasts a population of approximately 163,000 people. The city is situated 25 miles north of Hartford, CT and 90 miles SW of Boston. The police department in the city has accumulated a group of their old, unrepairable vehicles that are ready for old car removal. In the August 14, 2015 edition of masslive.com a story titled ‘Springfield police set to discard 31 junk cruisers for scrap’ composed by Peter Goonan that outlined the following details: “No longer shiny and sleek — make your best offer for 31 worn, battered, stripped police cars that once “zig-zagged” these streets to respond to emergencies and idled outside crime scenes. The city is seeking to sell 31 “junk” cruisers for scrap this month to a single buyer.
The cars are parked around a ‘dirt and gravel lot’ on Worthington Street. Police Sgt. Richard C. Hottin, said the cruisers chosen for the sale are beyond repair, ranging from car accidents to blown motors to rusted frames and have been stripped of components to aid the active cruisers. The marked and unmarked cruisers are likely headed to a junk yard for be crushed. Bidders are invited to take an advance look at the cars. Hottin says it’s not worth us fixing them or anyone fixing them. They will be sold for scrap – one lot – take them all.
The cars are Ford Crown Victoria’s, Taurus’, a Bronco and an Explorer. A benefit of the sale will be allowing the city to clean out the lot The PD has tight parking and the clean-up of the lot should help provide more space. The city will sell the cars to the highest bidder, who will remove the vehicles after their formal release, unless there is an agreement for additional time, under the bid guidelines. The city reserves the right to refuse any bid less than the current salvage value of the cars.” To see the complete article, visit this link.
The retired vehicles in Springfield are much further along in their life than many other such vehicles that are no longer being used, yet useful as day-to-day vehicles for others. One such article dealing with this topic (2014) was written by Jason Whitely on usatoday.com which reported the following: “Retired unmarked police cars have always been for sale online. Craigslist alone lists dozens of retired police cars in North Texas. Most are unmarked. Security guards buy some and smaller police departments do, too. A lot of PDs strip their patrol cars of specialized law-enforcement equipment before selling them, but its removal is not a requirement in Texas.” This article is more focused on preventing retired service vehicles from being purchased to someone who potentially could use them as a tool to impersonate themselves as being a police department vehicle. The full story is available here.
My key thoughts on this topic are as follows:
- Why wait to accumulate so many of these “dead” cars before getting them removed for scrap? As they linger they take up space that could be used for other purposes and as they decay could leak toxic auto liquids.
- Are such cities doing a cost analysis to evaluate if these vehicles are better off being sold at an earlier phase of the car’s life span? Perhaps when they are still running, but have aged to the point where they become less dependable for such intensive usage and are more likely to need repairs more frequently?
- Retired police vehicles and other such marked units should always have the markings that define the vehicle as such removed prior to selling them or scrapping them to protect against impersonation by another owner in the future.
