Our next story involves the recycling of the automobile child safety seats that is underway in King County, WA, which is the county where Seattle is located.
On September 9, 2015 a story titled ‘New car seat recycling and reuse programs’ was composed by Teresa Yuan on king5.com with the following information: “What can parents do with a car seat their child has outgrown? Groups like Cool Mom, West Side Baby and Zero Waste Washington (ZWW) say this is a frequent question they get. In ZWW reached out to Total Reclaim, a recycling plant in Seattle. Parents can bring used seats to the recycling facility and workers will dismantle and separate them so they can be processed for $5. The old way wasn’t to recycle them, but put them in the trash, going to a landfill. When they come here, the materials will be separated out and go back into some product that can use them.
While a good car seat can be safely used for a few years, they don’t last forever; most seats expire around 6 years after the manufacture date (usually printed on the bottom or the back the seat). Through West Side Baby, families can donate a car seat to the social service agency in King County. A trained technician will inspect it, go over the history of the car seat and make sure it hasn’t been in any accidents. If a technician approves the car seat, it will go to a family in need. There are several other car seat recycling programs in King County also” The full article is available here.
On a more local level here in northeast Ohio, the University Hospitals Car Seat Recycling Program is also available. Here are the details from uhhospitals.org: “The car seat recycling program at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital gives an environmentally friendly way to dispose of unneeded or damaged seats. This recycling gets old or unsafe seats out of circulation while also keeping tons of plastic, metal, and cloth out of landfills. Used car seats are inspected & evaluated for potential future use. Those that are safe to be reused are cleaned & offered to those without the means to purchase a new car seat. Seats that cannot be reused are dismantled and recycled, keeping them out of landfills.” Here is the link to the program.
On the page there is a form to download that is referred to as a ‘Donation Waiver’, with the following declaration: “I hereby declare that I am the original owner of the car seat(s) that I am donating and verify that it has never been in a motor vehicle collision, has not been misused in any way, is clean, has all of its components, contains the identification label, and is not more the 3 years old from manufacturing date. I verify that the car seat has not been recalled, and if it has, the recall has been corrected to meet US FMVSS. I verify that the car seat has all of its harness straps, clips, seat cover, padding and screws. I also confirm that the locking mechanism locks securely.” As far as physical damage, they are looking for the following:
- Cracks/chips, any white or grey markings or lines in the shell
- Warping, rust or broken rivets in the metal frame.
- Harness straps worn or frayed edges or broken stitches in the harness, tether or lower anchor straps.
- Signs of rust on metal.
