Benefits of Auto Recycling

Here at Cash 4 Cars Akron we continue to promote happenings within the auto scrap & recycling market. Aside from being a place to scrap a car for cash or sell an old car, we embrace the efforts of those seeking to make sound environmental decisions. Our next topic relates to how the auto industry recognizes that there is a financial benefit to maintaining an environmentally focused product. Mr. Phelan makes the point that “Automakers realized that safety features had morphed from regulatory requirements they begrudgingly met into a competitive advantage. Cars with more safety features sold better, for higher prices than cars without them. If you doubt that, try to find a new vehicle without curtain air bags to protect occupants from head injury. They’re not required, but virtually every vehicle has them. We’re moving into a similar era for consumer expectations of vehicles’ efficiency and environmental impact.” I agree partially with his opinion in that consumers are heavily influenced by environmentally efficient products—but more because they can quantify and realize a financial benefit personally. For example, a vehicle that has excellent fuel economy is great for the environment; however, I what makes it appealing is that the consumer can see the direct correlation between fuel efficiency and the money they save buying fuel. Safety items like airbags are also important since they save you in the event of an accident. What I’m saying is that I don’t think consumer purchasing decisions are heavily influenced by what a manufacturer’s overall policies on recycling and sustainability are because it doesn’t directly provide them with a computable reason of which to base their decision. Overall, companies like to promote their various stances under the names of “social responsibility”, “a green company” or “environmental sustainability”. If I am right in this observation, then why would so many large and successful companies put time, effort and resources into these missions? The reason is that it gives them some news to report to the public. If they launch an initiative that lowers their waste sent to landfills by 30%, then they have a story worthy of a press release that generates “buzz” about their company and products. Obviously it helps to some degree in making the company’s image more positive; however, when a customer is going to purchase a vehicle they are going to base their decisions on more tangible factors that directly affect them.

Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Times posted an article on April 25, 2015 titled ‘Automakers learn green is the color of money’ with the following points: “Go green. For automakers and suppliers, it’s not a suggestion. Environmental sustainability has become a recipe for success. GM earns more than $1 billion a year by selling waste material from its plants around the world. It cut its energy bills $435 million by making its U.S. plants more efficient. GM also reuses materials that previously would have ended up in landfills. Cardboard shipping containers that deliver the Buick Verano are turned into sound insulation to keep the car quiet on the highway. Ford cut the cost of its radical aluminum-bodied F-150 dramatically by developing new processes that lets it sell scrap pieces that used to go to waste. Ford calls it closed-loop recycling because the truck that delivers aluminum to the plant returns scraps to the supplier, where they end up on another truck. Ford’s Dearborn plant became a tourist attraction in part because it’s a showplace for the latest ways to make manufacturing energy efficient. Its roof is covered with growing grass that reduces the building energy consumption & helps keep water in the local ecosystem rather than just funneling rain into storm drains.

Vehicles are becoming more fuel-efficient, as the industry moves toward  new fuel & emissions standards. Areas that should have a big impact include:

  • Engine downsizing: Smaller engines will use a new generation of turbochargers & super-high pressure fuel injection to save fuel while also providing good performance.
  • Electrification: Batteries & generators will run more systems and supplement the engine, putting a little bit of hybrid in just about every vehicle.
  • Transmissions: There’s no end in sight to the growing numbers of gears automatic transmissions offer. Advances are likely to make continuously variable & dual-clutch transmissions more common.
  • Lightweight materials: Aluminum is in the news because of the Ford F-150, but get ready for widespread use of carbon fiber, new types of steel & others metals magnesium.
  • Networked systems: Infrastructure will talk to vehicles, providing fuel-saving information about traffic, weather and other conditions.”
