In an October 9, 2014 article by May Ann Ford of Pantagraph.com, she announced a solution for disposal of old scrap automobile tires as described here: “Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations in Normal is offering residents a chance to recycle old tires for free. The plant on Fort Jesse Road will accept a maximum of four tires per vehicle this Saturday. Agriculture tires also will be accepted with an appointment. The HR Manager for the plant says 507 tires were recycled by the plant during a similar event last year. The recycled tires are used to make ballistic material, for fuel, and for the subsurface layer on tracks used in track and field sports. Michael Brown, executive director of the Normal-based Ecology Action Center, said old tries can be a significant problem for communities if there aren’t options for discarding them properly. Tires left lying outside are perfect for attracting mosquitoes, which carry West Nile virus.
