Powering Auto Recycling
Here at Cash 4 Cars Akron/Canton we continue to monitor new progress within the business of recycling junk cars and scrap vehicles. The battery used in the GM EV, known as the Volt, is finding a secondary assignment beyond its primary function. As we see more of these vehicles on the road, we can expect new such uses to develop further.
The June 16, 2015 edition of autonews.com has a story from Reuters titled ‘GM uses old Volt batteries to power office building’, with the following highlights: “GM is using old batteries from its 1st-generation Chevrolet Volt electric car for secondary purposes including powering an office building. Five old batteries from the Volt are powering the GM Enterprise Data Center. Pablo Valencia, manager of battery life-cycle management, is working on the secondary functions of Volt batteries with partners to test for other uses.”
The battery in the 1st –gen Volt (according to media.gm.com) has a listed weight of under 400lbs and is known to last up to 40 miles of driving on a charge. In order to fully recharge the battery it must be plugged into an electrical outlet and the process takes between 3 and 8 hours. The battery pack module is mounted under the body of the vehicle. It seems that this vehicle is very efficient. The initial Volt model was a hybrid, meaning it operates on electric and has a gas motor. The range of the vehicle when it has a fully charged battery and full tank of fuel may exceed 350 miles.
